Yesterday was Benji's birthday. My kitty is now 9, which everyone says is old but I promise you it's not. He is still the young thing he has always been. My lovely little Kitty Cat.
Wow i love my cat. I know I'll miss him so much next year, because cats have healing properties. Anyone who has one or has been close to one knows what I mean. Their smell is very calming, like the smell of a close friend or someone you love (for those of you who are clueless, admit it. Your mom has a comforting smell. and if you think I'm lying, go look it up. Babies instantly know their mother's smell as a source of comfort). So Benji has pretty much been there to sit on my lap everytime I was loosing it.
Hopefully you have something similar in your life so you know what I'm talking about.
But affection is an interesting topic. My cousin was here for a few extra days due to some unfortunate incidents, but it was for the better in my opinion. Cause I actually got to see her! Hooray! So we sat outside and painted our toes a nice, dusty pink. And we talked about life, which is always helpful. I love other people's prospectives. We hung out all afternoon and then we went to the red sox game and basically people watched the entire time. There were so many characters to pick from...it was great :)
And she told me some really important things.
About moving into college
about families
about...everything.
affections included.
So for the rest of the day, besides overwhelming affection for my cousin and my cat, I began to rethink other relationships I have with people who are close to me. Do you realize how many things in our lives we take for granted? Especially people. Oh I am a BIG culprit of that one. Sometimes the things we wish for are only really exciting for a brief time. And what I realized from talking to my cousin, was that you really do need an outsiders prospective on somethings. Because when you are involved you do not see so clearly.
Beautiful things happen.
And its wonderful to discover them on your own.
Go out there and be honest with people. Please. Dont lie. Dont pretend to be something you are not. Just be a friend. A shoulder. a listener. That is what I wish for you.
So yesterday was a day marked with different kinds of affection.
for my mom's never ending phone conversations
for my kitty's sweet little expressions
for my cousin's understanding
for my brother's competitiveness
for my afternoon tea
for my dad's weirdness
for my friends' commiseration about certain events
and for the people I spoke to, no matter how briefly.
I guess I just felt really lucky.
So thank you.
Cats are so wonderful....they do have healing powers and can bring you into such a meditative state...but don't underestimate the playfulness and freedom that dogs bring out too....aren't animals wonderful?
