Freiburg and the Schwarz Wald

Hey kids

So Sam and I are now in Freiburg, and when I last posted I was fighting with the computer in Jörg's house and packing. So I went downstairs and had a really long and nice conversation with Jörg's wife in the kitchen. In German. About various things, but it was really awesome! I feel so so SO much more comfortable speaking German with native speakers than I do speaking French because I feel like French people are often waiting to laugh at me, while Germans wait and listen and then try to help you out.

But this isnt a lets shit on the french people entry. Sorry about that.
So we spent the next day walking around Frankfurt, and we saw Geothe's house, some gorgeous patisseries, and Frankfurt's enormous and very architecturally interesting malls. We left from Jörg's house around 4, very sadly, though I certainly want to come back some day and got on the train to Freiburg. Apart from a very very loud group of ex-frat boy Germans who were headed to Freiburg for a weekend of drinking and hiking, the trip was harmless.

Freiburg is a much smaller city than Frankfurt. So we were, perhaps a little disappointed, when we arrived here. The train station wasnt far from the hostel, so we walked and ended up in the center of peace love and nature hippie land. As you all know, Sam and I arent really nature people. We planned this into our trip so that we would have some nature experience to complete our cultural tour. And it was also a time to relax instead of being GO GO GO like we are in cities.

Well peace love and nature hostel was a little grungy, to put it mildly. The first night we went to an italian restaurant and sampled the local offerings. Yesterday we woke up and went for a hike, right away, to get that over with. We took to calling it a 'glorified walk' and spent the entire timing laughing at inside jokes from the trip\our new favorite joke of 'urban' people. What I mean by this, no offense to anyone, is the type of person who lives in Newton\Brookline etc. who believes they are super urban cool. I wont go into detail cause people will be pissed we me, but I find it to be one of those really ironic fashion statements that makes me smile secretly. Sam agrees with the hilariousness, and we have a hand motion that goes with the joke.

So we took some 'urban' pictures in the Blackforest. It is REALLY dark in there. Which was nice, cause it was SO HOT in the town. There werent even that many bugs, so it was pretty super.

When we came back we had a leisurely lunch in a square nearby, and we had some life naps and then went on a quest to find Pookie's requested Biertaschen. See, these Biertaschen or those beer mugs with the silver pointy tops always advertised by guidebooks about Germany, and easily found in touristy areas. WE ARE NOT IN A TOURISTY AREA. So there was a brief panic moment, since I had talked to Nico the night before and he still really wanted one. But we lucked out. There was a store next to the church that had them. For a better price too. And I found one that was not trashy. Though I was embarassed to be seen carrying around the bag, though I have been able to speak in German to nearly everyone we have met here!

We went back so Sam could take a nap and I read my copy of Eugene Onegin, but we were soon joined by our new roomates. It was a french couple first. And the man had interesting side burns that sam later ranted about all day, but they were harmless. Even ME, the anti PDA patrol, thought their cuddling was cute. Especially when they got their own room and left us alone. Did I mention that tonight we are sharing a room with 21 random people? and we already walked in on a nookie couple twice today...ooops!

We had dinner deeper into town and discovered that near Freiburg university, the 2nd oldest universität in Germany, there is a cool shopping area! Complete with a Starbucks, a McDonalds, and a Levi store called JEans World! Yeah, so I bought some hippie Jewelry and then died with happiness because we found a store today that sells really old african beads. AKA MY FAVORITE! So I made friends with the guy and was talking to him about the different regions the beads come from, and how old they were etc. I bought mom some beads for her birthday and I think She'll be very happy when I put together what I came up with in my mind. Excellent!

Anyway, so we got up this morning and had a very leisurely breakfast, next to some old German men who seemed to be gossiping and reading the paper in a local cafe. We went to the train station and got our reservations for Paris all straightened out (in 100% German thank you very much) and we had a nice wander. We went inside the Freiburg Münster and walked around the Meat, Fruit and other crafty things stands outside the church. All very nice! Tonight there is a gospel concert to celebrate summer, and so there are lots of Bier and Wurst stands everywhere, advertising their prices and goods. Should be fun!

Our last trip before we came to this lovely internet cafe filled with flies, was to the Pennymarkt, to buy some more RitterSport. At least its a shared addiction to German Chocolate. And we had a Brezel and a Berliner yesterday. SO GOOD!

But tomorrow very very early we go to Paris. As our last stop before we come home. Alas.
It was been really fun.

So love you all, see you next week! (WHEN I FIND OUT MY RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE AT YALE!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!)
