Cape Weekend

Unlike many of the less than flattering songs by Vampire Weekend, the Cape was splendid this weekend. Brendan, Sam and I took the ferry out early saturday morning after a less than exciting Peirce Reunion where, not surprisingly, the people I talked to were the exact same people I talked to in elementary school (wow. How we have all grown up. Not) and a slightly better strawberry night, which was fun cause I saw the people I have been seeing all week. How super. I did come home to sometime with Bex and I met Jazzy, who is darling. It's always nice to make new friends who actually GASP live near me.

So we had a warning that the seas were rough. That was an understatement. It was a little nerve wracking for the first few minutes because I am not a very sea friendly person (I have nightmares with perfect storm themes), but it became fun after that. I stood outside on the front of the ferry for a while with Brendan and later Sam, laughing as we were lifted off the front of the boat every so often by the swells that were throwing the boat around. One couple stood next to us the entire time, looking as serene and peaceful as I do when I am sitting and reading by myself. I was a little envious of them, but it was really fun to feel my stomach drop continously for about 40 minutes. At least I could SEE the swells coming on deck. My hair was eventually rolled into tight dred locks by the wind and my hands just about froze off so I went back inside to see everyone getting sick. Sam had warned me, but the reching sounds just about made me sick, so I sat down, blasting my ipod to cover the noise and watched the horizon. People who were attempting to walk back and forth stumbled drunkenly landing in each others' laps, and I just sat there listening and texting. Yay blackberries!

We made in to Provincetown and back to Truro without any more issues. I picked up Bee from the very tiny Provincetown airport and then we went back and played cards with Nico for a few hours. The swim was chilly, and so Brendan Sam and I mixed that with long sauna sessions (I am pleased to say that I have converted them too) while Bee went surfing with Pookie. The evening was filled with more card games -- among them Hearts, Presidents and Egyptian Rats Screw -- and we all jumped in the pool around midnight. Despite the FREEZING WATER and wind chill it was lots of fun.

The next morning I was woken up by Bee poking me in the shoulder and making strange gurgling sounds. It was, suprisingly, not annoying. We played more cards and then decided on a trip to Provincetown since it was sunny and nice. Bee was pleased to see her first drag Queen, Ellie, who was singing in the square and "following her dream." I love Provincetown. We argued about the actual intentions behind the song "poker face" after we saw her because apparently it's about bisexuality and I thought it was just about being loose. This was all inspired by the text from last night : (617) Jesus sees your poker face...he is not pleased.

At home we changed quickly and made for the beach...which was rather cold. Within 20 minutes of our arrival, Ben, Jen, Sarah and Kathryne were at my house so we returned. Around 4 I had recieved a bonfire permit so we got everything together (including a ridiculous amount of Junk food left over from Prom, Graduation etc.) and returned to Ballston Beach. The bonfire was really fun (i think we all agree) and even though we failed at telling ghost stories and we ate a lot of very very processed foods that would horrify Mr. Andre (Ben's idol) I think everyone felt closer after the experience. There was a certain calm acceptance of each other that I think everyone, in particular, I, had been missing. It was liking a moment that forced you to remember why you were friends with these crazy people sitting in front of you. What had brought us together. What kept us together through these years and why were all here together one more time before the summer and college split us apart. I felt it especially when I was watching everyone talk to each other quietly. Sam and I continued the Yale vs. Harvard arguement (affectionately, as always. Sam you have a space in my dorm, now and forever), Sarah and Bee spoke in high squeaky voices, Jen leaned against Brendan, Ben sat there with his unmoving face, watching the others around him, Kathryne whispered to Jen and Nico was matching around like he usually does. We watched the fire burn until there wasnt enough wood to keep it alive and the embers were the only light nearby...apart from the sketchy ass man over by the dunes with a red light fishing. We had a moment of silence to listen to the waves and the fire.

We all went home and played cards for a few million years (or so it felt) and then we went out in the pitch black, jumped in the pool and ran around the house. Everyone was a little more wild than usual...I guess being in the woods really makes people more like animals. We all collapsed around 1 er 2 am, and the next morning Sam was out on the couch texting. As usual. We made some pancakes, and drove to the hopping truro center for some milk etc. By the time we got back everyone except Sarah and Nico were up.

I took Jen, Sarah, Ben, Brendan and Kathryne back into Provincetown to mess around in the Marine surplus store. Ben played around with the idea of buying a safari hat and Brendan thought about some scary biker gloves, but really Jen was the only one who bought anything. We were looking for a henna place but there were only air brush tattoos around. So that was a little disappointing, but we loaded back into the car and found Isaac, Miles and Kelly by the pool with Sam and Bee.

All in all a super fun weekend. I think we all enjoyed ourselves, and managed to forgive and forget some things that had been hanging around. I was really glad we could start the summer that way, and now it officially feels like summer. So I can stay up late reading about the places I am going next week (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and go and get coffee with friends...so many possiblities!
