its going to be another case of the y and the z mix up, please forgive me in advance. Just with time and such...you know how it is. i'll do my best to keep it all in order.
So last you heard from me was in Luxembourg. Which is actually a really cool place, unless you have a population claustrophobia complex like I do, where you panic a little when there arent enough people within a 50 mile radius. That evening Sam and I went into the city once more to have dinner and chill before we welcomed new roomates (good news, there werent any. Bad news, the new school group of French tweens made the hallway their own personal 24 hour party room and screamed the whole night. it was worse than being at a screamo concert without earplugs) and guess what? we walked into the opening night of the concert series! The Luxembourg philharmonic was playing some fabulous music and the whole population of the city was there (seriously not very many people. oh dear). There was this crazy guy singing rock songs by queen with a Lüxembourgische accent and then the orchestra played some other popular numbers...classically? It was cool for a while, and definitely a way better way to celebrate the first day of summer!
The next morning we took an extended life nap to make up for the screaming tweens. This means we sat in the lounge and slept on the couches until 2 in the afternoon. YAY FOR SUMMER BREAK!!! We got in the shuttle, which was driven by a very friendlz transvestite, and we got on the train going through Trier and to Koblenz. We changed trains there to head toward Frankfurt, which meant we got to go along the Rhein river and see no less than 6 castles, just chilling in the mountains. Within minutes, Sam admitted that Germany exceeded his expectations. AND I QUOTE: Germany is way prettier than I expected - Sam Pokross. WE have ANOTHER Fan here people! SEEE!? I'm not crazy to be so in love!
We got to Frankfurt without any issues and used Jörg's very detailed instructions to find his house. See, I forgot to introduce Jörg. We met in Colombia while I was with Dad at a conference about the American Development Bank. I was the professional translator while we went on a tour of the flower exporting sites in the mountains of Medillin. Jörg asked me to come and say with him...so I decided to take him up on it.
Anyway, we found the house without any problems and met his whole very friendly family. They had a bbq for us out in the yard, and jörg tried to get sam to drink more and more beer the entire evening. It was such fun!
The following morning we got up at 7 am and went with Jörg, who had a business thing, to Köln (Cologne in English). We walked around there, Sam tried some of the local brewery's famous Kölsch Beer, we saw the Romanische exhibit in the Museum, and we visited the super famous church that they even made stuffed animals for. It was a very nice afternoon! That evening Sam and I took the ICE aka the super fast and reliable train back to Frankfurt and walked around the main shopping strip. Its actually an incredibly beautiful and modern area, so we had lots of fun! I think we will visit it again tomorrow, and maybe actually do some shopping!
Today we got up late and went to Heidelburg, where the first printing press was created and where Germany's oldest universität is. The train was very slow because we took the regional Bahn, but it was a very nice old city to visit. Sam and I, being huge tools, wore our Harvard and Yale tshirts so we could take pictures on site, and we couldnt resist getting universität von Heidelburg tshirts. We even got a discount for being students! I also found my favorite peach iced tea, which i used to carry around back in the Ulm adventures, so all my photos today prominently display my pfirsich iced tea. yum yum yum!
There is also an old castle outside of Heidelburg, that basically tried to defy its own doom three times, through 2 pillages, and a fire-lightning scenario. So its falling apart, and we saw some Japanese tourists there also loving it, but it was really really cool and totallz different from the Vianden site.
When we got home Jörg had us sit outside and we tried a lot of the Frankfurter specialties with an assortment of German bread, cheese, hams and wursts. It was reallz cool! We even got a 20 minutes warning about this mzsterious beverage called Apfelwein (apple wine) that is super sour and common in Frankfurt, but it was reallz good. Despite all the warnings, and the fact that no one here seems to like it much... Sam liked it too, so mazbe we're just crazy!?
Basicallz, Germany is still as awesome if not more so than I remember it. From sitting outside discussing American and German politics, the bread, the trains and fabulously OCD rules, and the ancient cities...ahhh i love it so much here! I'm glad that we get the whole week here, since we are just going down to Bavaria and the Black forest (hansel and gretel???) tomorrow evening, after a few more adventures in Frankfurt. I'll really miss it, maybe even more than I missed Amsterdam!?
So I love the few, but very nice emails I have recieved. Can someone please make some awesome seeing everybody plans for the 4th of July!? And let me know!? I'll be back the 2nd, and we are missing you guys! Much Love, D
